Göteborg (Gothenburg) is located on the Swedish west coast in the southern part of the country, 300km north of Copenhagen, 300km south of Oslo and 450km southwest of Stockholm. Göteborg can be reached conveniently (and often enjoyably) in different ways.

1. By air

Probably it never has been so cheap to travel by air !

The airport “Göteborg Landvetter” is served by Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), Lufthansa, Air France, British Airways, KLM, Austrian Airlines, Crossair, Finnair and other carriers, including low-fare companies. It connects with direct flights to many major cities in Europe. There are about ten daily flights to and from the Scandinavian hubs Copenhagen or Stockholm.

Landvetter airport is located 25km east of the city. There are busses every 30min (airport bus, flygbussarna) that stop in front of the congress centre (“Korsvägen/Svenka mässan”). The trip takes 20min and costs SEK 60 (in 2002). Taxis have a fixed price (ask for it!) from the airport, which should not be more than about SEK 400 (Euro 45, USD 50).

On Sunday, July 6, and on Monday, July 7, 2003, there will be a conference service for your assistance in the international arrival hall.

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) is the official airline for this conference. Bookings using the reference number CFSE0304 qualify for the special conference fares for flights operated by SAS, Lufthansa (between Germany and Scandinavia), Spanair, Air Baltic and Air Botnia.

The airport “Göteborg City” (also called Göteborg Säve) is served by RyanAir (so far Göteborg-London Stansted and Göteborg-Frankfurt Hahn). Check under www.ryanair.com. This airport is located 15km north of the city and is connected by a bus service. There will be an information board for conference delegates in the arrival area and we will be present when flights arrive on Sunday July 6 and on Monday, July 7.

2. By train or bus

By train from the European continent you connect through Copenhagen. There are about 15 trains per day from Copenhagen to Göteborg. Depending on the type of train, the journey from Copenhagen to Göteborg takes between 3.5-5h.

There are various bus connections from different European countries, check with your travel agent.

Buses and trains arrive at the central station "Centralstationen". To get from there to the conference centre, best buy an SEK 100 ticket for local trams and buses in one of the  “pressbyrån” or “tidpunkten”, take tram 6 or 8 direction "Tynnered" (costs 2 points or SEK 12 of your ticket) and leave at "Korsvägen/svenska mässan". Your accommodation should be close by too. (You can buy a tram ticket also at the driver for SEK 20).

3. By car and ferry

When planning for a vacation or travelling from Europe with several people, the car may be a more suitable option and possibly the most economic one. Any way that you choose, you will need to traverse over water to reach the Scandinavian subcontinent.

There is a parking building adjacent to the conference centre. Costs per 24h: 70 SEK.

Coming from the western part of Central Europe you generally travel via Hamburg, Germany. From Hamburg the journey to Göteborg takes about eight hours. There are several options:

Coming from the Eastern part of the Central Europe, you may choose the route via Rostock or Sassnitz and then by ferry to Trelleborg. This ferry takes 6-7h with three departures per day. Operated by Scandlines (www.scandlines.com). Trelleborg-Göteborg: 300km.

There are ferries to Göteborg from the UK and those are served by DFDS (www.dfdstorline.com/Infobridge/). The most common route is Newcastle-Göteborg (via Norway, 26.5h, two per week).

Coming from Eastern Europe and Finland: there are various ferries connecting to Sweden, commonly via Stockholm (from Talinn, St. Petersburg, Helsinki) or Norrköping (from Helsinki, Riga) or Karlskrona (from Gdansk). Stockholm-Göteborg is 450km, about 5-6h by car or 3.5-6h by different types of trains. Check your travel agent for companies serving those ferry routes.

To reach the conference centre by car: when coming from South you are on the E6. Leave at "Örgrytemotet", you see the Hotel Gothia Towers from the E6 at your left. When arriving by ferry in Göteborg go to the E6 direction Malmö and again leave at "Örgrytemotet"; the conference centre is then to your right.
